Post the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Rohit, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah took an extended break, opting out of the T20I series against Australia and the white-ball segment of the South Africa tour.

Upon his return to South Africa, Rohit led training sessions and actively participated in intra-squad matches, emphasizing the team’s determination to secure a Test series victory, a feat unprecedented for visiting Indian sides.

Regarding the T20 World Cup in 2024, Rohit remained guarded in his response, keeping details about his eagerness close to his chest. Speculation surrounds Rohit’s future in T20Is, given his hiatus since India’s exit from the T20 World Cup semis in 2022. While rumors suggested his leadership in the T20I series against South Africa, Rohit opted for a break, with Suryakumar Yadav leading in his absence.

Addressing questions about his role in T20Is, Rohit expressed the team’s desperation to perform well and hinted at answers soon.

“Desperation is always there to play good cricket. Everybody wants to do well. Whenever we get opportunity, we want to do well. Everybody is keen on it. I know what you are trying to say. Milega, aapko jawab milega uska (you will get the answer to it soon),” Rohit Sharma said about his future in T20I format.

Hardik Pandya led the Indian T20I side in 2023, but an injury has sidelined him, raising uncertainty about Rohit’s captaincy in the upcoming T20 World Cup. With the focus on the Test series against England, Rohit’s participation in the T20I series against Afghanistan seems improbable.
