Facing 106 balls and scoring two of fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, Kohli’s innings included eight fours and a six, breaking the previous record of 49 ODI hundreds shared with Sachin Tendulkar.

The significance of achieving this feat on Tendulkar’s home ground was underscored by the cricket legend’s presence, with Tendulkar himself applauding Kohli’s accomplishment. Adding an extra layer of symbolism, November 15 marked the anniversary of Tendulkar’s last international match for India, a Test against the West Indies at the same venue.

Meanwhile, taking to his official social media handle, the God of Cricket posted a special note for the Indian star batter, “The first time I met you in the Indian dressing room, you were pranked by other teammates into touching my feet. I couldn’t stop laughing that day. But soon, you touched my heart with your passion and skill. I am so happy that that young boy has grown into a ‘Virat’ player. I couldn’t be happier that an Indian broke my record. And to do it on the biggest stage – in the World Cup Semi-final – and at my home ground is the icing on the cake,” said the little master.

In a heartfelt celebration, Kohli bowed towards his childhood hero, Tendulkar, as he was showered with applause from the stands. This milestone marked Kohli’s third century in the tournament and his 279th ODI innings, complemented by an impressive tally of 71 fifties in addition to his 50 centuries.
