Plenty of surprises in the Indian T20 squad

Team India’s 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup carried a lot of surprises. There were a couple of notable exclusions while some members surprisingly made it to the final squad. Yuzvendra Chahal and Shikhar Dhawan were two of the big names that could not make it to the eventual squad.

On the other hand, the biggest surprise was the return of R Ashwin. He came in place of Washington Sundar while Ishan Kishan got a chance ahead of Shikhar. Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, and Shreyas Iyer were named in the reserves.

Shardul Thakur reacts to omission from the final squad

Shardul Thakur has been one of the best Indian cricketers in recent months. Across formats, the Mumbai cricketer has been in good form. Apart from his bowling contributions, Shardul has also surprised many with the bat. However, he was left on the standby list and was not selected to the final squad. Interestingly, India has only three frontline pacers in the form of Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami for the World Cup.

Speaking to Times of India, Shardul expressed his opinion on losing out on a spot in Team India. He said, “Yes, I am a little disappointed. It’s everyone’s dream to play and win the World Cup for your country. If you talk about the Oval Test, then yes, it (my performance) was (in) red-ball format. But if you see, I have done well in both the departments in white-ball cricket too over a period of last two years. Now I’m a part of the reserves for the World Cup, so I guess I have to be ready. I can get a call-up at any moment.”

That said, there is still a chance for Shardul if he does exceedingly well in the second phase of IPL 2021. He will play for CSK in the UAE leg of the tournament.
