Former Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli was rested for the 3-match T20I series against the Sri Lankan cricket team. In his absence, Shreyas Iyer received a chance to bat in the number three position, and the former Delhi Capitals team captain grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

Shreyas scored 204 runs in three matches without getting dismissed even once. He scored a fifty in all three innings and bolstered his chances of a place in the T20 World Cup 2022 squad. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra said:

It is not a given that Virat will always play at No.3: Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra further added that Shreyas Iyer has asked a very good question to selectors about the number three position. When asked which position he prefers batting at, Shreyas replied the number three spot. Aakash felt the Indian team management could promote Virat Kohli to the opener’s role if needed.

“He has asked a very good question from all of us and the selectors. He was asked about his preferred position, he said No.3. Virat Kohli bats at No.3 but it is not a given that Virat will always play at No.3,” Chopra concluded.

In the same video, Chopra opined that the duo of Virat and Rohit Sharma could open the innings for the Indian cricket team with Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant taking the next three positions. All-rounder Hardik Pandya or Suryakumar Yadav could play the finisher’s role at number six.
