The 24-year-old did not join the rest of the squad in Delhi due to his prolonged low platelet count. Medical specialists at Kaveri Hospital, Chennai, are currently overseeing his condition, with a BCCI doctor accompanying him to monitor his progress.

On October 9, 2023, the BCCI released a medical update on Gill, confirming his absence from the upcoming match against Afghanistan on October 11 at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.

The statement reads, “Shubman Gill will remain in Chennai and under the care of our medical team.” Gill will only return to the hotel once he recovers, but as it stands, he may miss more than just the Afghanistan match.

India is set to face Pakistan on October 14 at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, and if Gill’s health improves swiftly, he might fly directly to Ahmedabad from Chennai.

During Gill’s absence, India’s top order struggled against Australia in the opening ODI World Cup fixture. Ishan Kishan, Gill’s replacement, was dismissed for a golden duck, while Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer were both out without scoring in Chennai.

Team India though, eventually won the match thanks to former India captain Virat Kohli and KL Rahul’s brilliant work in the middle-order as the Men in Blue successfully chased down 200 runs.
