KL Rahul made his ODI captaincy debut against the South African cricket team yesterday at the Boland Park in Paarl. Although the Indian cricket team looked stronger than their opponents on paper, they lost the match by 31 runs. Rahul lost his first toss as ODI captain and received an invitation to bowl first. The South African cricket team started off slow.

The likes of Quinton de Kock, Janneman Malan and Aiden Markram could not contribute much. At one stage, the Indian cricket team reduced the South African cricket team to 68/3. It looked like the South African cricket team would lose all their wickets cheaply. However, the same did not happen thanks to a 204-run partnership between captain Temba Bavuma and middle-order batter Rassie van der Dussen.

The duo added 204 runs for the fourth wicket and guided the team to a total near 300. At one stage, 300 looked gettable, but the Indian cricket team restricted the Proteas to 296/4. Both Bavuma and Rassie scored a century for the South African cricket team.

Chasing 297 to take a 1-0 lead in the series, the Indian cricket team lost captain KL Rahul early. Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli recorded fifties, but a disappointing performance from the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer and Rishabh Pant led to the Indian cricket team’s defeat. Shardul Thakur’s fifty ensured that the Indian cricket team crossed the 250-run mark.

KL Rahul spoke to media before the 1st ODI and the clip from press conference is going viral now

Before the match against South Africa, a reporter reminded Rahul about his captaincy record that he had not done so well as skipper. Not reacting much, Rahul responded with a smile and said:

“Thanks for the stat man. Gives me a lot of confidence.”
