Indian cricket team’s vice-captain KL Rahul recently recalled the day when Virat Kohli informed that he would have to lead the side during the tour of South Africa. Earlier this year, when the Indian cricket team visited South Africa to play an ICC World Test Championship series against the home side, Kohli captained the team in the first game.

However, he missed the second match because of an injury. Since Rohit Sharma was unavailable and Ajinkya Rahane had lost his position of the vice-captain, Rahul got a chance to captain the Indian cricket team. The wicket-keeper batter did a decent job but he could not lead the Indian team to a win.

During a recent appearance on the Red Bull Cricket Room hosted by Clubhouse, KL Rahul narrated the full story of what happened before the second Test in South Africa.

“As a vice-captain you slowly prepare yourself to become the captain in due time. But then I didn’t expect it to come to me so quickly and in such circumstances: the morning of the game, Virat (Kohli) came to me in the bus and said, ‘My back is not feeling great, you might have to captain the team,” said Rahul.

KL Rahul led the Indian cricket team in 4 matches against the South African cricket team

Virat Kohli was back for the 3rd Test of the ICC World Test Championship series against the South African cricket team. In the ODI series played after the Tests, Rahul led the Indian team again. The new skipper found it challenging to lead the side in South African conditions as South Africa beat India 3-0.

Since Rahul is the vice-captain of the Indian team right now, it goes without saying that he will get the chances to lead India in the future as well whenever the regular captain is unavailable.
