In an unexpected twist during the World Cup match in Chennai, Afghanistan secured a commanding eight-wicket victory over Pakistan. This remarkable performance by the Afghan cricket team earned praise from various quarters, including Pakistan’s cricket legend, Waqar Younis.

Afghanistan’s pursuit of a 283-run target was led by openers Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who laid a strong foundation. This was further reinforced by Rahmat Shah and the unbeaten innings of 77 and 48 runs from captain Hashmatullah Shahidi, respectively.

This victory added to Afghanistan’s impressive streak in the tournament, including a prior victory against the defending champions, England.

Waqar Younis, sharing his thoughts on Star Sports, expressed, “It is very hurting. But I’m very happy for Afghanistan. They deserve it. The way they handled the pressure and played cricket is commendable. I’m happy for them. I’m disheartened because of what I witnessed today.”

Nevertheless, Waqar’s assessment of the Pakistan team was harsh. He lamented their lack of attitude and criticized their play as lacking fundamental cricket understanding, akin to “freestyle bowling.”

He commented, “This is not the Pakistan team I know. The attitude was entirely absent. There was no method. It was just ball after ball. We weren’t fielding well, and we were passive. There’s much to discuss because they’ve given us a lot to talk about.”

The former Pakistan captain emphasized the team’s absence of structure and finesse, especially in areas where they once excelled, such as fielding and bowling. This significant loss has put Pakistan’s World Cup prospects in jeopardy, reducing their chances of reaching the semi-finals.

Currently, Pakistan is in fifth place. However, following three consecutive losses, another loss to South Africa this week could potentially dash the hopes of the 1992 champions in advancing to the knockout rounds.
