Watch: Devon Conway shows off innovation with 1-handed sweep shot for 4 in warm-up match vs SA

Devon Conway played a match-winning innings of 78 runs off 73 balls against South Africa in the 2023 World Cup warm-up match yesterday. The match happened at the Greenfield International Stadium in Trivandrum. Rain interrupted the proceedings during the South African innings. In the end, New Zealand won the match by seven runs via D/L method.

Kiwi captain Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bat first in Trivandrum. The decision worked in his team’s favor as the Blackcaps posted 321/6 on the board in 50 overs. Devon Conway top-scored for the Kiwis with a magnificent 73-ball 78 before he retired. His innings consisted of 11 fours and one six.

One of the 11 fours smacked by Conway was quite innovative. Facing off-spinner Aiden Markram’s bowling, the New Zealand opener played a one-handed sweep shot instead of a traditional two-handed sweep. Interestingly, the ball still beat the fielder and went for a four. It showed how weel Conway was playing during the warm-up match against South Africa. You can watch the video here:

The video shared by ICC on Instagram has received more than 150,000 likes so far. Some fans joked in the comments box that it was like the way an individual would clean the place with a broomstick.

Devon Conway also played a reverse sweep during his match-winning knock against South Africa in warm-up match

Conway was in some form today as he played some unique shots and entertained the fans present at the Greenfield International Stadium. Batting against Keshav Maharaj in the 20th over, Conway played a reverse sweep shot that went for a four. He was batting on 48, and this shot helped him complete his half-century. The ICC World Cup 2023 will start this Thursday. Defending champions England will be up against New Zealand in the tournament opener. It will be interesting to see how Conway performs.
