Ruturaj Gaikwad is one of the many players who has become a superstar under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. The Chennai Super Kings signed him in the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League, but he was on the bench for the full season. Gaikwad made his debut for the Chennai-based franchise in IPL 2020 and impressed the fans with his spectacular batting performances.

Chennai Super Kings unsurprisingly retained him for the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League. Gaikwad’s performance improved further as he ended up winning the Orange Cap award for scoring the most runs among all batters in the tournament. Ahead of IPL 2022, Chennai Super Kings named Ravindra Jadeja as their new captain, but he stepped down midway during the season.

Since Jadeja does not seem like a future captain for the Chennai Super Kings, the franchise will need a new skipper when MS Dhoni says goodbye to the cricket field. A Twitter user shared an incident from the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League, where Ruturaj Gaikwad had a chat with MS Dhoni for the field placement when Andre Russell was batting.

We could have removed the short fine-leg and put a deep square-leg instead].” Gaikwad told Dhoni. “Sharp cricket mind,” Dhoni replied to Gaikwad.

The old conversation between Ruturaj Gaikwad and MS Dhoni has gone viral on Twitter

CSK will most likely try out a new captain in IPL 2023, and showing why Gaikwad is one of the top contenders to take over from Dhoni, a Twitter user wrote:

“Dhoni himself knows Ruturaj has a decent cricket brain. This from 2019 when Ruturaj was a reserve player and on the bench.”
