Here’s why Shubman Gill is not playing Team India’s ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 opening match vs Australia

The Indian cricket team is set to kick-off its ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign today vs Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. All is set for the big clash between the two favourites for the tournament.

Toss has already taken place and it is the Australian team captain Pat Cummins who has won the toss and opted to bat first. Australia fielding a formidable team whereas there is a bad news for the Indian cricket team.

The Rohit Sharma led side is missing the services of their star opening batsman Shubman Gill. Shubman Gill was suffering from dengue fever and although he has gotten better, he is still yet to recover fully and hasn’t travelled with the team to Chennai.

In Shubman Gill’s absence, it is the left-hand wicketkeeper opening batsman Ishan Kishan who is playing for the Men in Blue will open the inning for the side alongside India captain Rohit Sharma, who both also open the inning for Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

Meanwhile, it is Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj who are Team India’s prime pace bowlers alongside Hardik Pandya. India have opte to player with 3 spinners in the form of Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav.

On the other hand, Australia have only Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell as the spin bowling option with Marnus Labuschagne as one extra option. Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood are the pace bowling trio for the Aussies along with Cameron Green.
