Stepping up in the absence of regular captain Temba Bavuma, Elgar emphasized the importance of winning Test series, prioritizing victories and cherished team memories.

“Personal stats don’t concern me; my focus is on winning and securing series triumphs. These are the moments you treasure with your team, where everyone plays a crucial role. Test series victories hold a unique significance, akin to a World Cup win. Though I haven’t had that opportunity, this is my World Cup, and I aim to emerge victorious,” he stated.

Despite already leading 1-0 after a convincing Boxing Day Test win, Elgar stressed that a draw in the final Test would be as detrimental as a loss for the Proteas.

“We’re fortunate that losing the series is not an option, but a draw would be almost as detrimental as a loss. This Test is monumental for us, the highlighted one of the year. The New Year’s Test at Newlands against formidable opposition doesn’t get much bigger and better,” added the 36-year-old.

Elgar urged the team to focus on delivering a solid performance and highlighted the significance of starting the year with a victory.

“For many players, the New Year’s Test is a significant occasion, with many experiencing firsts. We want them to relish the moment while staying mindful of the opportunity to secure a 2-0 win. Drawing the series is not in our thoughts at all,” he concluded.
