Shubman Gill made his T20I captaincy debut last weekend against Zimbabwe. The Indian team is currently playing a five-match series against the African side. Since the first-choice players recently returned home after winning the T20 World Cup, India have sent a second-string second for this tour, led by Shubman.

It is pertinent to note that the squad comprises players, who are more experienced than Gill. Still, the team management has entrusted him with the responsibility of leading the squad because of his phenomenal performance in the IPL.

Just a few years ago, Gill’s idol Virat Kohli was the full-time captain of the Indian team. The following two players have had the experience of playing under both Virat and Shubman now.

    1. Washington Sundar has played under the captaincy of Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill

Off-spin bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar made his T20I debut under Rohit Sharma in late 2017. Sundar played his first few T20Is under Rohit’s captaincy only, but in 2019, he finally got a chance to play under Virat’s leadership for the Indian team. It was in a T20I against West Indies hosted by USA.

Five years later, Sundar is now a part of India’s T20I playing XI which is led by Shubman. Sundar did his best to avoid a loss for Gill on captaincy, but Zimbabwe managed to beat India.

    2. Khaleel Ahmed

Making his return to the Indian T20I team after almost five years, Khaleel Ahmed has also had the experience of playing under both Virat and Shubman’s leadership. In the away series against Australia in 2019, Khaleel played under Virat’s captaincy. Right now, against Zimbabwe, he has been playing under Shubman’s captaincy.

Ahmed played his first T20I for India after the match against Bangladesh on November 10, 2019. He returned with figures of 0/28 in three overs. Since India lost the game, Gill dropped Khaleel from the playing XI for the second T20I.
