Asia Cup 2008 was the last edition of the mega event which was hosted by Pakistan. It was a six-team tournament as well. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are the common participants in Asia Cup 2008 and 2023, whereas in 2008, Hong Kong and UAE participated. Meanwhile, in 2023, Afghanistan and Nepal are the other two teams.
Asia Cup 2023 will take place in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. PCB has the hosting rights for the entire tournament, but due to off-field reasons, India will not travel to Pakistan for Asia Cup 2008.
Back in 2008, the captains of all teams were different as compared to 2023. In fact, only two players from the six teams which participated in 2008 will be playing in 2023. Here’s a list of the two cricketers.
1. Rohit Sharma played in Asia Cup 2008
Rohit Sharma was a part of the Indian squad which participated in the Asia Cup 15 years ago. He was a new batter at that time and was trying to cement his place in the Indian cricket team. Sharma played in all six matches for India, where he scored 116 runs at an average of 29.
15 years later, Sharma is all set to captain the Indian cricket team in Asia Cup 2023. It will be exciting to see if he can lead the team to the trophy.
2. Mushfiqur Rahim
Mushfiqur Rahim is another player from the 2008 edition who will play in 2023 edition as well. Rahim played five games for Bangladesh in that mega event, where he amassed 105 runs at an average of 21.
In the last 15 years, Rahim has established himself as one of the biggest match-winners for Bangladesh. he will aim to bring his experience to the fore in Asia Cup 2023.
