Indian batters have gained enormous popularity in world cricket owing to their excellent performances. The likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul and others are among the top Indian batters right now.
Since there is an abundance of talent in India, the competition level for each position in the playing XI is sky high. The Indian batters need to adapt different roles just to earn a place in the team. Last year, fans saw how Venkatesh Iyer performed well for the Kolkata Knight Riders as an opening batter but had to play as a finisher for the Indian cricket team.
In a reverse fashion, the following two Indian top-order players had started their journeys as a finisher in the league but ended up playing as top-order players for the nation.
1. Rohit Sharma – Finisher for Deccan Chargers, Opener for India
Current Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma started his IPL career with the Deccan Chargers back in 2008. At that time, Sharma majorly batted as a finisher. He won multiple matches for DC.
DC team management used him as an all-rounder and often gave him the ball as well. Many fans would remember that Sharma took a hat-trick against his current team Mumbai Indians in 2009.
2. Suryakumar Yadav – Finisher for Kolkata Knight Riders, number 3 or 4 batter for India
Suryakumar Yadav has cemented his place in the Indian team as a number four batter in T20Is. When Virat Kohli is unavailable, he bats at the number three position for the Men in Blue.
Back when he used to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders, Yadav would play as a finisher. His job was to play cameos and score some quick runs when the team needed. The role is much different in Mumbai Indians and India team right now.
