Test cricket is the ultimate format of the game. The reason why almost every fan believes it as the purest format is that the match goes on for five days, with both teams getting a chance to bat and bowl twice. Every player gets a fair chance to display his skills in this match.
There is no need for unnecessary aggression with the bat or too many variations with the ball. Fans enjoy this format a lot. The unpredictability of Test matches is such that there can be 20 wickets to fall on a single day, while there can also be a day where only two batters bat through the whole day without losing a single wicket.
It is rare to see such partnerships in the modern era of cricket, which is primarily dominated by the T20 style. However, here’s a list of two pairs who batted for a full day since 2017.
1. Hashmatullah Shahidi and Rahmat Shah – Afghanistan vs Zimbabwe 1st Test
The Afghanistan vs Zimbabwe Test series started in Bulawayo a few days ago, and the pitch in Bulawayo seems lifeless because three batters of the home team scored a century. In the response, the Afghanistan team lost two wickets, but the duo of Hashmatullah Shahidi and Rahmat Shah batted out the entire day on the third day of the Test.
Playing at the Queens Sports Club, Shah has completed a double hundred, while Shahidi has touched triple figures as well. They scored 330 runs in 95 overs throughout the day’s play, frustrating the Zimbabwean bowlers.
2. Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews
A rather surprising name to feature on the list is the Sri Lankan duo of Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews. They scored a hundred each to add 274 runs for the fourth wicket in a match against the New Zealand cricket team back in December 2018.
Their unbeaten partnership in the second innings helped Sri Lanka draw the match. The islanders scored 282 in the first innings. In response, New Zealand scored 578. Sri Lanka were down to 14/3 in the second innings when Mendis and Mathews stitched up a phenomenal stand.
