T20 World Cup 2024 group stage is about to end. However, it does not seem like Kane Williamson and his team New Zealand have even shown up at the mega event. The Blackcaps decided against playing any warm-up matches, and it has resulted in the team not getting adjusted to the conditions in West Indies.
New Zealand have already lost against West Indies and Afghanistan in Group C. In both matches, it looked like the Blackcaps did not have much intent, which is why the team management will make some serious changes to bring the team back on track.
Kane Williamson has struggled in the T20 format for quite some time now. Even in IPL, he could not find a regular place in Gujarat Titans’ match squad. Hence, New Zealand may look beyond him in T20Is, and here’s a list of two men, who can replace him as captain.
1. Mitchell Santner can replace Kane Williamson
The ideal candidate for this role is Mitchell Santner, who had been leading New Zealand in T20Is while Kane Williamson was away from the field due to injury. Santner is a calm player, who knows how to make the most out of his resources.
Plus, Santner has spent a lot of time with MS Dhoni in IPL, which would have benefited his leadership skills. He has a 12-8 win-loss record as captain in T20Is, making him a top contender for the job.
2. Lockie Ferguson
Not many fans would know that Lockie Ferguson has a 100% win record as New Zealand captain. The Kiwi fast bowler led the team in two ODIs, and New Zealand won both of them. Considering the success that fast bowlers have achieved as captains of late, Ferguson could be the next captain of New Zealand in T20Is.
