Impact Player rule was introduced in the IPL last year. Hence, it is normal to see the teams using 12 players in every match, 11 each for batting and bowling. The players have been rotated as per a strategy, which allows the teams to have maximum strength in batting and bowling as well. However, another way of a team using more than 11 players in a match is the concussion substitute rule.

If a player is hit on his head while batting or fielding, he has to immediately take a concussion test, depending on the result, the officials decide whether he is fit to continue or another player of the same category can take his place. Unlike Impact Player, a batter cannot replace a bowler in the concussion substitute rule.

There have been two instances where the teams were forced to use the concussion substitute in the IPL matches. Here’s a list of the two such players.

    1. Yudhvir Singh Charak came in as a concussion substitute for Mohsin Khan

In tonight’s IPL 2024 match between Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders, Mohsin Khan was hit on his head, which led to the Lucknow-based franchise needing a concussion sub. Since Khan was a specialist fast bowler, LSG had the option to bring in a specialist fast bowler as his replacement.

The Super Giants went for Yudhvir Singh Charak, who is also a pacer. Interestingly, Yudhvir took a wicket on the first ball that he bowled.

    2. Vishnu Vinod

Vishnu Vinod became the first player in the IPL history to play in a match as a concussion sub. He had to come in as a replacement for Ishan Kishan in the Qualifier 2 match for the Mumbai Indians against the Gujarat Titans last year. Kishan had a collision with his teammate Chris Jordan while fielding, forcing the Mumbai-based franchise to take a substitute.
