Gautam Gambhir is reportedly the hot favorite to become the new head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. The former Indian opener is a multi-time ICC trophy winner, and he recently mentored the Kolkata Knight Riders to their first IPL trophy since 2014.
If Gambhir indeed becomes the next head coach of India, he will likely leave his position at Kolkata Knight Riders to avoid conflict of interest. Speaking of Gautam Gambhir becoming India’s head coach, he will likely bring about some radical changes, judging by his views stated in various interviews.
There is a high chance that the following two players will receive enormous backing from the management if Gautam becomes the new head coach of India.
1. Gautam Gambhir might groom Shreyas Iyer as the next Indian captain
The Indian team will soon undergo a transition. It is likely that Rohit Sharma may step away at least from one format so as to manage his workload. The ODI format seems to be the likeliest one, especially if next year’s Champions Trophy happens in the T20I format.
In that case, Shreyas Iyer could be next in line for India’s captaincy. He has been the vice-captain in the past, and Gambhir has observed him closely at KKR and Delhi Daredevils, making him a top favorite.
2. Suryakumar Yadav
Gautam once mentioned that Kolkata Knight Riders leaving Suryakumar Yadav was a wrong move. He even saw Yadav as a future leader. The right-handed batter is now the world number one T20I batter. Gambhir rates Yadav highly, and Mr. 360 of India would be delighted with the appointment of the new coach.
