Punjab Kings (PBKS) desperately need a new captain for the IPL 2025 season. The Kings appointed Shikhar Dhawan as captain in 2023, and the decision backfired because the left-handed batter missed most of the matches due to injuries.
In 2024, he has been on the bench for a majority of the games, forcing Sam Curran to lead the team. Jitesh Sharma, who was initially named the vice-captain of the team, did not even get a place in the starting XI for the ongoing match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Hence, PBKS need a new IPL captain in 2025. Luckily for the Punjab Kings, a mega auction is expected to happen next year, and there will be several talented leaders available in the auction pool. Here’s a list of two names whom Punjab can target as skipper.
1. KL Rahul can return as PBKS captain in IPL 2025
KL Rahul had the best time of his IPL career when he was playing from the Punjab Kings from 2018 to 2021. Although the team never qualified for the playoffs, Rahul was always among the top run-getters of the tournament. Plus, he also got a chance to lead the team in 2020 and 2021.
Considering the fallout between KL Rahul and Lucknow Super Giants owners in IPL 2024, it is likely that Rahul will be back in the auction. PBKS should try to sign Rahul again.
2. Rohit Sharma
Many cricket fans think that Rohit Sharma will leave the Mumbai Indians after IPL 2024. The team management has shown more faith in Hardik Pandya. Since Rohit has a lot to offer as a captain and a batter, he can help the Punjab Kings win their first championship in 2025. PBKS should go all out for the Hitman if he enters the next auction.
