Becoming world champions is the dream of every cricket team in the world. However, not all teams can achieve the feat. There are three top trophies in the cricket world right now, and they are – ICC T20 World Cup, ICC Cricket World Cup and ICC World Test Championship.
Sometimes, when a team becomes the champions of any of these three tournaments, it establishes them as the best in the world. This gives them confidence and then they go on to dominate the world for a few years more.
On the other hand, there have also been such instances when a team became the world champion but lost momentum after the big win and had an immediate downfall. In this article now, we will look at the three such instances.
1. New Zealand after becoming ICC World Test Champions
New Zealand defeated India in 2021 to become the inaugural WTC Champions. However, since then, they have struggled in Test cricket. They suffered a home defeat against Bangladesh and also away series defeat against India. The defending champions have already been knocked out of the race to the WTC Final even though they have one more series left in the ongoing cycle of World Test Championship.
2. Sri Lanka after becoming T20 WC Champions in 2014
Sri Lanka won their maiden T20 World Cup title in 2014. However, after that tournament, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene never played T20Is again. It started the downfall of Sri Lanka as they were eliminated in Super 10s of T20 World Cup 2016 and then had to play qualifiers for the next two T20 World Cups.
3. India after 2011 WC
India toured West Indies, England and Australia after the 2011 WC. They lost against England and failed to qualify for CB Series Final in 2012. The Indian team also lost against Bangladesh in 2012 Asia Cup and failed to qualify for final. After some changes in the team, India bounced back and won Champions Trophy in 2013.
