As per reports, BCCI will be sending a second-string Indian men’s squad for Asian Games 2023. Since the timing of this event is close to the 2023 ODI World Cup, the regulars will obviously not feature. Therefore, the likes of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya will not be available to captain the squad. Nevertheless, India has a lot of other options. Here, we take a look at three players who can captain India in Asian Games 2023.
1) Shikhar Dhawan
It is almost confirmed that Shikhar Dhawan will lead the side. He has done that previously when the regulars were not available. However, the management must consider that Dhawan may not get into Team India in the future and hence, there would be no benefit in him having a captaincy exposure. Therefore, it is not sure if Dhawan will actually be in the squad.
2) R Ashwin
R Ashwin is one of the players who can captain India in the Asian Games 2023. Ashwin is right now not a part of the ODI Team. If this stays that way, he could be a probable candidate to lead Team India. He would be an experienced spin option and offering him captaincy could help India if Ashwin might become a part of the leadership group in Tests.
3) Sanju Samson
Sanju Samson already has decent experience of being a captain in the IPL. If he is not in the plans for the ODI World Cup, he is a firm option to lead the side. The selectors would also get a chance to see how Sanju would perform under pressure.
