MI had a good retention phase before the auctions. Hence, they had specific areas to target at the auctions. In line with this, they seem to have got their preferred names but missed out on a few.
1) Quinton de Kock
QDK did well for Mumbai Indians at their peak. With Ishan Kishan going out, MI would have wanted QDK back at the top. However, KKR wanted QDK, as well, because they could not risk waiting for Phil Salt. Hence, KKR signed the cricketer. Later, Mumbai Indians signed Ryank Rickelton as the overseas wicket-keeper.
2) Jofra Archer could have been one of the Mumbai Indians cricketers in IPL 2025
Jofra Archer is one of the prominent cricketers Mumbai Indians lost out on the final bid at IPL 2025 Mega Auctions. Despite the failure with him in the last stint, MI wanted the cricketer again. Hence, they went hard for the Englishman. On the other hand, Rajasthan Royals wanted to improve the pace attack, which was looking bad until then. Therefore, they really wanted to get Archer back in the RR unit.
3) Josh Hazlewood
Mumbai Indians needed some decent overseas bowlers and with Bumrah already there, the bowling unit would have looked fantastic. Hence, they had a right target in mind. Josh Hazlewood would have been the perfect idea for a sensational bowling line-up. That said, RCB wanted an overseas leader in the pace department and therefore signed the cricketer eventually.
