BCCI secretary Jay Shah recently stated at a media event in Saurashtra that Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian team at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 later this year. Shah mentioned how the Indian team fell agonizingly short of winning the ICC ODI World Cup in 2023.

Here’s what Shah said as per TOI at the ceremony, where the SCA Stadium was renamed to the Niranjan Shah Stadium:

“I’m confident India will win 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma.”

Many fans expected Hardik Pandya to lead India at the marquee event, but here are three reasons why BCCI selecting Rohit Sharma as the captain for T20 World Cup 2024 is the right move.

    1. Rohit Sharma has shown improvement as Indian captain

India made it to the semifinals in Rohit Sharma’s first ICC event as captain, which was the 2022 T20 World Cup. In 2023, India won the Asia Cup and then finished runners-up in the ICC ODI World Cup. Even in the Test format, India reached the WTC Finals. Hence, Rohit has shown improvement, and perhaps, a title win awaits next.

    2. India lost their last series in West Indies under Hardik Pandya

India toured West Indies for a five-match T20I series last year and suffered a defeat. Hardik Pandya captained the Indian team in that series. Perhaps, Pandya is not yet ready to lead the team in conditions like that of West Indies and USA.

    3. Rohit Sharma has got his game right before T20 World Cup 2024

In India’s last T20I before the World Cup, Sharma batted thrice and destroyed the Afghanistan bowlers. Although the conditions were tough, Sharma slammed a ton and helped India win a memorable double Super Over contest. With form and confidence by his side, Sharma should lead the nation to a historic triumph.
