According to the rule, it has been close to five years since MS Dhoni retired. In one of the old IPL rules, after 5 years of retirement, a player can be considered as retired. If this rule comes back, MS Dhoni could be an uncapped retention for CSK.

    1) It could be a dent in the legend’s legacy

MS Dhoni is arguably the greatest cricketer India has seen in the recent times. Considering the legacy he holds, it does not sit right if you term him as an uncapped cricketer. Although we know the reason behind the rule, MS Dhoni coming on the field as an uncapped player may not be the perfect idea.

    2) Retaining MS Dhoni as an uncapped player does not give much benefit to CSK

If you take a look at the retention criteria, retaining MS Dhoni in an uncapped slot does not benefit CSK much. If not next season, MS Dhoni will surely retire before the next Mega Auction. Hence, this slot can be better used to retain a young player who could serve the side in the future.

    3) The philosophy of the league could become questionable

IPL’s core philosophy is “where talent meets opportunity”. One of the main reasons for setting up the league is to provide a platform for the uncapped and the lesser-known cricketers. If a legend like MS Dhoni becomes uncapped, somewhere, this philosophy may be unfulfilled. And, CSK and MS Dhoni are too big in the league and they should not become a part of this. Hence, CSK could avoid retaining MS Dhoni in this slot.
