KL Rahul is one of the senior batters in the Indian Team right now. Yes, his performance in the last two T20 World Cups might not be good but he has some reasons to justify his case for a selection.
1) A batter for all the conditions
The pitches in the West Indies could be tricky and we still do not know how the pitches in the USA will behave. In this regard, it is wise to have batters who can adapt to various conditions. KL Rahul plays both spin and pace well. He has also played in the USA before. Hence, his selection would have been useful.
2) KL Rahul must have been in the T20 World Cup squad because he was close to his peak in the last 6 months
From the Asia Cup last year, KL Rahul has been a different batter. In IPL 2024, as well, he has done well with some aggressive batting. Although late, he was getting close to realizing his full potential. Hence, despite his non-performance in the previous two editions, he could have still been in the fray for selection.
3) An experienced option for all the batting slots
His experience is one of the reasons KL Rahul should have been selected for the 2024 T20 World Cup. It is the first ICC event for Sanju Samson; Rishabh Pant is coming off a long break while SKY, Hardik and Jadeja are not in great form. As a backup, India could have had an experienced batter who would have adapted to all the batting conditions. KL Rahul was capable of that. Hence, he must have been on the flight to the USA.
