Star Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar is celebrating his 25th birthday today. The off-spin bowling all-rounder from Tamil Nadu came into the limelight after his fine performances for Rising Pune Supergiant in IPL. Soon after, he made his debut for the Indian T20I team.
Over the last few years, Sundar has been in and out of the Indian team. Injuries have hurt his career as well, but the 25-year-old has still managed to achieve some exciting records in his international career. Speaking of Sundar, here’s a list of three records held by him which no other Indian cricketer has achieved.
1. Washington Sundar is the youngest Indian to pick up a T20I wicket
Washington Sundar made his debut for the Indian T20I team in a bilateral series match against Sri Lanka back in the year 2017. At that time, he was just 18 years and 80 days old. In his debut game itself, Sundar picked up the wicket of Kusal Perera caught and bowled to become the youngest Indian to take a wicket in T20Is, a record which stands till date.
2. Most balls bowled by an Indian spinner without a no-ball
Bowling a no-ball is too rare for a spinner, especially in white-ball cricketer. However, even the best of the spinners commit this error at times and end up overstepping while bowling for their teams. Sundar is yet to make this mistake though. In his T20I career, he has bowled 939 balls, with not even one being a no-ball.
3. Only Indian with a 50, a wicket and a catch in the same T20I match
Last year, New Zealand visited India for a T20I series, with Ranchi’s JSCA Stadium playing host to the first T20I. In that game, New Zealand defeated India by 21 runs. However, Sundar ended up making a big record.
He first took two wickets in the first innings, including a caught and bowled dismissal of Mark Chapman. After that, Sundar scored his highest T20I score of 50, albeit in a losing cause. He became the first Indian cricketer to score a half-century, scalp a wicket and take a catch in the same T20I.
