Before the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 tournament began, MS Dhoni featured in a commercial, where he pointed out that the brand that he was endorsing launched their product for the first time in 2011. And in that year, India won the 2011 World Cup. So, now that the brand was relaunching its product again, he pointed out that India can win the trophy again.
While that was a smart way of endorsing the brand, surprisingly, there have been many coincidences between India’s campaigns of 2011 World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup. Here’s a list of four of them.
1. India started both 2011 World Cup and 2022 T20 WC with revenge
India lost to Bangladesh in 2007 World Cup. Four years later, the Men in Blue avenged that loss with a victory over Bangladesh in the first match. Similarly, India had lost to Pakistan in 2021 T20 World Cup. They avenged that defeat in the first game with a memorable win.
2. Indian fast bowler was ruled out of 2011 World Cup and 2022 T20 WC
Praveen Kumar was named in the Indian squad for the mega event in 2011. However, an injury ruled him out of the tournament. Similarly, Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the 2022 T20 WC due to an injury. Sreesanth was the replacement in 2011, and Mohammed Shami was the replacement in 2022.
3. India, Netherlands, South Africa and Bangladesh in 1 group
It is tough to find an ICC tournament where the groups had a similarity like 2011 WC and 2022 T20 WC. India were with Netherlands, South Africa and Bangladesh in the group stage of the 2011 mega event. Even in 2022, the Men in Blue are with the same teams.
4. India lose to South Africa by same margin
South Africa chased down the score in 49.4 overs against India in their match in 2011 WC. Yesterday, in 2022 T20 WC, the Proteas chased down the target in 19.4 overs versus the Men in Blue.
