Becoming the captain of the team is the dream of every player. However, not every cricketer who is a good individual performer can do a good job as captain. In the past, fans have seen many great cricketers flop in the role of a skipper.

Being the skipper of the side, the player not only needs to look after his performance but also focus on the combination of the team, the performance of other players and the mindset of the other players as well. Some cricketers became the skipper unexpectedly. Here’s a list of four such cricketers.

    1. England’s new ODI captain Zak Crawley

Zak Crawley was named England’s skipper for the upcoming ODI series against Ireland. Crawley is not even in England’s squad for World Cup but he will lead the squad in the 50-over format, starting tomorrow.

“Yeah, I was shocked. I was just hoping to get into the team and play more for England, but they told me I was captain and it’s a great opportunity for me. It was Motty [head coach Matthew Mott] who gave me the call to say I’d be in the squad and captaining,” Crawley said today.

    2. India’s stand-by T20I captain Jasprit Bumrah

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah never captained Gujarat in domestic cricket or Mumbai Indians in IPL. However, he was selected to lead the Indian side in the fifth Test against England last year and the T20I series against Ireland this year.

    3. Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ruturaj Gaikwad was named the Indian skipper for the T20I tournament in Asian Games 2023. Gaikwad has majorly been present in India’s squad as a backup opener. He is yet to lead in IPL. Still, BCCI have entrusted him with the responsibility to lead the team.

    4. Lockie Ferguson

New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson will lead his nation in the upcoming ODI series against Bangladesh. Most of the senior players will take rest during the Bangladesh tour. Hence, Ferguson has received the opportunity to lead the team.
