Recently, the squad for the England ODI and T20I series was announced. There were a few players who made it only to the T20I squad while a few others were exclusively selected to the 50-over format. The requirements from each format is different. Hence, Team India is taking this route. We take a look at the T20I specialists for India in this article.

    1) Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik is one of the Indians in the T20I setup but not in the ODI plans. Until a few months ago, DK was nowhere close to Team India. However, after a brilliant IPL, he has earned a comeback to the T20I squad. He has now cemented the spot by doing well at home against South Africa. While he has all but guaranteed his spot for the 2022 T20 World Cup, it seems the management may not prepare him for the 2023 50-over World Cup. The latest decision by the selectors is a proof of the same.

    2) Avesh Khan

Avesh Khan is also not a part of the ODI squad. Instead, the likes of Prasidh Krishna have been given a go. This means that for now, Avesh is restricted to the T20I squad. Considering he is a hit-the-deck bowler, Avesh is probably being developed for a role in Australia, where he would be extremely useful. Prasidh is also a similar bowler but he has done well in ODIs and hence, he has been picked over Avesh.

    3) Harshal Patel

Harshal Patel is a T20 specialists. His variations will have its most effect only in a T20 game where the batter will be under pressure to not conceded dot balls. Moreover, Harshal’s skill would work for him if he has a quota of only 24 deliveries. If it is more, he could become predictable. Therefore, as expected, he has been kept out of the ODI squad.

    4) Umran Malik

Umran Malik is also one of the four Indians in the T20I setup but not in the ODI plans. Just like Avesh, it seems that even Umran Malik is being used with an eye on the 2022 T20 WC. Therefore, he is not in the ODI setup right now. However, if he performs well, he will surely get a chance in the ODI squad, as well. His pace is something that works on most conditions and therefore, he will have the edge over most pacers.
