    Mankad run-out is a unique way of dismissal in the sport of cricket. In the past, the bowler who used this mode of dismissal to send a batter back to the pavilion received criticism as many fans did not see it in the ‘Spirit of Cricket’.

    However, of late, the rules have been updated, and the efforts have been made to destigmatize this form of dismissal. Still, there are some players who are against it because they feel it is not real cricket.

    While players have been declared out in this fashion multiple times, here are the five instances when a team withdrew a mankad run-out appeal.

    1. Mohammed Shami’s Mankad run-out against Sri Lanka, 2023

    In the first ODI of the ongoing series between India and Sri Lanka, Mohammed Shami ran Dasun Shanaka out at the non-striker’s end when he was on 98. Indian captain Rohit Sharma withdrew the appeal and said at the post-match presentation:

    “Mohammad Shami went for the appeal, but Dasun Shanaka was batting on 98, so we didn’t want to get him out that way.”

    2. Ravichandran Ashwin’s Mankad run-out against Sri Lanka, 2012

    Another entry from a Sri Lanka vs. India match which happened during the Commonwealth Bank tri-series in 2012. Ravichandran Ashwin ran Lahiru Thirimanne out at the non-striker’s end after warning him. However, after a discussion with the umpires, Indian captain Virender Sehwag pulled out of the appeal.

    3. Mannat Kashyap, 2022

    In an U-19 women’s match between India and South Africa, Mannat Kashyap dismissed LC de Villiers in a similar fashion. However, the Indian U-19 women’s team called the batter back in the game.

    4. Deepak Chahar, 2022

    In an ODI match between Zimbabwe and India last year, Deepak Chahar got the wicket of Innocent Kaia by a run-out at non-striker’s end but the Indian team did not send the batter back to the dressing room.
