The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has introduced some new rules to counter the slow over rate issues in the T20 format of the game. In recent times, slow over rate has become a major issue for the tournament organizers. If a team does not complete the overs on time, it pushes the ending time of the match back from the originally planned time.

It eventually impacts the audience and also the broadcasters who would have planned to show another program on their TV channel after the match ends. The Caribbean Premier League has found a unique solution to this problem. Here are four new rules which they have introduced:

    1. CPL teams will have to keep 1 extra fielder inside the circle if they are behind in 18th over

A timer will be there during the Caribbean Premier League matches. The teams will have to complete the innings inside 85 minutes. If they are running behind by the 18th over, the fielding team will have to keep one extra fielder, meaning total five fielders inside the 30-yard circle for the last three overs.

    2. Teams will have to keep 2 extra fielders inside the circle if they are behind in 19th over

Things will become more challenging if they are running behind at the start of the 19th over. The teams will have to keep two extra fielders inside the 30-yard circle, meaning only three fielders in the deep for the last two overs.

    3. CPL fielder to get red card for 20th over

If the team is running behind at the start of the 20th over, there will be six fielders inside the circle. On top of that, the fielding captain will have to select one player who will be off the field. There will be only eight fielders, and six of them inside the circle.

    4. 5-run penalty for wasting time

If the batting team wastes time on purpose, they will receive a warning first. If they waste time again with their tactics, they will be slapped with a penalty of five runs.
