The batting order starts with two openers, followed by two or three middle-order batters, a couple of batting all-rounders, a couple of bowlers who can bat and then the specialist bowlers. Normally, the number 11 batter has the worst numbers in cricket.
However, some bowlers have done well in Test cricket while batting as well. Interestingly, some of them managed to score more than 600 runs in their career while batting at the number 11 position. Here’s a list of the top four players who have scored the most runs at that position.
4. Glenn McGrath – 603 runs at number 11 in Test cricket
Former Australian cricket team fast bowler Glenn McGrath is one of the four names present on this list. He batted 128 innings at that position and scored 603 runs at a strike rate of 41.76. He remained not out 49 times.
3. James Anderson – 618 runs at number 11 in Test cricket
James Anderson has an opportunity to finish in the Top 2 because he is still playing actively for England. For the record, Anderson has scored 618 runs in 165 innings at a strike rate of 37.82.
2. Muttiah Muralitharan – 623 runs
Former Sri Lankan cricket team off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan scored 623 runs in 98 Test innings at number 11. His batting average at that position was 11.33.
1. Trent Boult – 640 runs
New Zealand cricket team fast bowler Trent Boult recently set a new record for the most runs by a player at number 11. He has aggregated 640 runs in 79 innings. He is one of the few players to have scored a half-century at number 11 in the history of Test cricket. If he continues batting at that position, he could finish with around 1,000 runs.
