On this day in 2020, MS Dhoni called it a day on his international cricketing career. After a legendary journey as an Indian cricketer, Dhoni finally retired on August 15. Fans expected him to say goodbye with a huge farewell match, but he decided to retire simply by putting up an Instagram post on his account.
Two years have passed since Dhoni retired from international cricket, and quite a few things are different in the Indian cricket universe now. Here’s a list of the four major changes that have happened since MS Dhoni retired.
1. Captaincy has not been stable after MS Dhoni retired
When Dhoni was the captain of the team, it was very rare to see him miss a match or series. But after his retirement, Team India has used so many different captains. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Shikhar Dhawan and Hardik Pandya have led the Indian team after Dhoni’s retirement.
2. Virat Kohli’s fitness
Back when Dhoni was an active Indian player, Virat Kohli was among the fittest players on earth. While he is still among the fittest cricketers, he has picked up multiple injuries in the recent past. Probably for the first time in his career, Kohli has missed so many matches in 2022 due to rest and injuries.
3. Team management
This is an obvious one. After the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, Ravi Shastri and co. left the coaching staff. Rahul Dravid became the head coach of the Indian team. It has been the start of a new era in Indian cricket under him.
4. Inconsistency in team selection
Quite a few players have made their debuts in the last two years for India, but not everyone has received consistent chances to prove themselves. This was not the case when Dhoni was playing, but because of the abundance of talent available, even the selectors have done their best.
