ODI Cricket has gone through many changes over the period of time. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has always tried to make the necessary changes to it to make it revelatory and interesting for the players and fans. There was a time when teams found it hard to score even 250 runs in an inning.

But then, teams are crossing 400 runs regularly now. Like this, once the ODI matches were played with a total of 60 overs, a bowler was allowed to bowl 12 overs in his full quota. But after 1987, it was changed to a 50-over match, and bowlers were allowed to bowl only ten overs in a full quota. But there have been five occasions when a bowler has bowled 11 overs in a spell.

    1. Purnima Rau (IND W) vs England in 1995

The first instance of such a mistake was recorded in a women’s ODI match between India and England in 1995. It was Indian bowler Purnima Rau who bowled 11 overs in her spell. It was due to a mistake in calculation by the on-field umpires.

    3. Neetu David (IND W) vs Australia in 2004

The third instance was recorded in a women’s ODI match between India and Australia in Surat in December 2004. Batting first, Australia’s women’s team posted 160/9 in 50 overs, and India’s Neetu David bowled a spell of 11 overs and ended up with a figure of 39/1. Chasing the target, Australia dismissed India’s women’s team by 128 runs and won the game by 32 runs.

    4. Mohammad Rafique (Bangladesh) vs Hong Kong in 2004

Out of five such instances, only one has happened in men’s cricket. It came at the 2004 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. It was the first game of the tournament in Colombo. Batting first, Bangladesh scored 221/9 in the first inning. In response, Hong Kong only managed 105 runs in 45.2 overs and lost all ten wickets. Bangladeshi all-rounder Mohammad Rafique bowled more than 10 overs. He bowled 10.2 overs and took 2/21 in his spell.

    5. Eden Carson (NZ W) vs Sri Lanka in 2023

The most recent instance came on June 30 (Friday) in a game between New Zealand women’s and Sri Lanka women’s at Galle International Stadium. Batting first, New Zealand posted a huge total of 329/7 with the help of Melie Kerr (108) and Sophie Devine (137) scoring hundreds. Chasing the target, Sri Lanka were all out for just 218 runs and lost the game by 111 runs. New Zealand’s Eden Carson bowled 11 overs for 41/2 after the umpires made a miscalculation with her number of overs.
