As things stand, there is a potent likelihood that a mega-auction would take place in 2021. While that would be a boon for some teams, it would be an unwanted occurrence for the others.

For CSK, though, a mega-auction in 2021 will be a blessing in disguise. After a disappointing season where they finished seventh, it is daylight clear that the squad needs tinkering. If it is a mini-auction, this might not be possible. However, if things stretch, CSK can have a better chance of assembling a formidable roster for next season.

That said, CSK would first want to retain the talented players in the current unit. In the present scenario, CSK may not complete their full quota of retainments, but definitely, at least two or three players would be kept back in the team. In this article, we talk about five players whom CSK must target to retain.

1. MS Dhoni

Whatever the pundits may suggest, CSK must make up their mind to retain MSD for 2021. One bad season is not a full stop, and being the player and character that he is, taking a chance on Dhoni is very much worth it. If they release him, it would be a moral loss, and this could affect the upcoming campaign. Moreover, it would be highly impossible to buy him back at the auctions considering the craze the man possesses amongst other teams. Hence, at least until MSD retires from IPL, CSK must keep hold of the legend.

2. Faf du Plessis

It might be the right time for Faf du Plessis to assume the responsibility that the likes of David Warner, AB de Villiers, and Kieron Pollard have at their respective franchises. Faf is capable of it, and CSK must make sure that happens. The first step is to retain him, and pouring above INR 10 crores in the process might be meriting it. As seen in IPL 2020, Faf is a quality batsman and can win games for you single-handedly. Especially now that Shane Watson is retired, the value of the South African would increase in the CSK line-up.

3. Ravindra Jadeja

At the end of the day, it is the Indian players in the team that takes you a long way in the tournament. Ravindra Jadeja is arguably the best domestic player in the current CSK squad, and hence, he should be an automatic retainment. Jaddu has improved his batting in recent months, and that should help him prove his case. While his fielding needs no discussion, the Saurashtra-cricketer is more than handy with the ball. He is also someone who has grown in this franchise, and for the good of all, he must continue playing in yellow.

4. Sam Curran

He might be young, and yet to prove his skills, but there is definitely a lot of potential in this man. Sam Curran is a quality all-rounder and would be the perfect replacement for Dwayne Bravo. The Englishman can bowl anytime in an innings and has the variations and abilities to pick wickets. With the bat, he can be destructive, and at the same time, can anchor an innings if required. He adds terrific balance to the playing XI, and would surely be in high demand in the coming years. CSK should retain him, and make use of his services to the maximum extent.

5. Ruturaj Gaikwad

Of the uncapped players in CSK, Ruturaj Gaikwad seems the most talented guy. From what he showed us in the latter-half of IPL 2020, he is worth the 3 or 4 crores of money that are needed to retain an uncapped player. He oozes calmness and seems to have the temperament to excel in tough situations. These qualities are highly rated in the T20 format, and therefore, CSK should keep hold of the youngster. It may also not be a bad idea if he is assured of the opener’s role next season so that his entire focus would remain on 2021.
