Delhi Capitals would be proud of their show in IPL 2020. Having started well, DC lost the plot midway through the season. However, they pulled off victories in two high-pressure games to reach the final. At the summit clash, courtesy of a superior opposition, the maiden-finalists ended as runners-up.

A mega-auction in 2021 may not affect Delhi very much. The team’s strength lies in its Indian batting, and overseas bowling. Both of these aspects can be retained if the management plan prudently. Of course, there would be some hard decisions to make. On that note, here are five players they must try to retain if there is a mega-auction in 2021.

1. Shreyas Iyer

Although he appeared out of touch at times, the overall impression was that Shreyas Iyer did have a decent IPL 2020. As a captain, the fans saw potential, and as a batsman, Shreyas further strengthened his case to be India’s long-term No.4. Delhi Capitals saw the future in him a few seasons ago, and it is likely that they would continue with their view. Hence, the Mumbai-cricketer would most probably be retained by the franchise. The management also has to decide Shreyas’ batting position in the line-up. Although his preferred position at No.3, there were too many changes in IPL 2020 due to Rahane’s presence. This is one area where both the player and the coach can work on.

2. Rishabh Pant

Pant may have had a lackluster campaign but based on what we have seen of him in the last few seasons, the youngster is set to stay. DC must not read too much into Pant’s 2020 form, and should rather back him even more from now on. A local lad, Pant’s presence is also important to appease the fanbase. The player is also a fine wicket-keeper, and this should further reinforce his case. He just needs a few good games, and the past form would come back immediately.

3. Kagiso Rabada

Kagiso Rabada was yet again brilliant for the Capitals in IPL 2020. Be it his wicket-taking ability at the death or the run-containing capability at the start, the South African was everywhere for the franchise this campaign. Rabada is a leader when it comes to the bowling unit, and DC must retain him at any cost. If he lands at the auctions, there could be a bidding war, and that would further make things difficult for DC. Hence, ahead of the other players, we feel DC must keep hold of Rabada for future editions.

4. Prithvi Shaw

Yes, he might have had a bad season, but you cannot ignore the fact that Prithvi Shaw is the best teenage talent in the country. He was in the form of his life until recently before an unforeseen ban came his way. Nevertheless, with him playing for India in Australia, the confidence could return back. His fearless batting in the powerplay is an asset for any team. Delhi Capitals is a future-minded franchise, and therefore, even ahead of Dhawan, they must think of retaining Shaw. In the next couple of years, it is inevitable that he would become the player everyone is expecting him to turn into.

5. Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan is clearly in the final few years of his career. Despite this, he was in glorious touch this season. In IPL, players tend to sustain form at least until 40-years-old, as that we have seen with the likes of Mathew Hayden and Shane Watson in the past. For Delhi Capitals, he is a boost to the squad. He adds the much-needed experience and allows the youngsters around him to play the natural game. That said, Dhawan’s instincts are aggressive, and if that kicks in, we may see a different side of his batsmanship.
