T20 World Cup is the grandest T20I tournament on earth. The International Cricket Council organizes the mega event once in every two or four years, where teams from across the world gather at one place and compete against each other to win the trophy.
Australia are the defending champions of the ongoing T20 World Cup tournament Down Under. Taking a hat-trick in a big event is the dream of every bowler, but only five of them have been able to achieve it thus far in the competition’s history. Here’s a list of those five names:
1. Brett Lee, T20 World Cup 2007
Former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee was the first player to take a hat-trick in the shortest format of the game. He accomplished the feat against Bangladesh in 2007 by dismissing Shakib Al Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza and Alok Kapali.
2. Curtis Campher, 2021
Ireland’s bowler Curtis Campher is the only player to have taken four wickets off four balls in a T20 WC match. Playing against Netherlands last year, he dismissed Colin Ackermann, Ryan ten Doeschate, Scott Edwards and Roelof van der Merwe off successive deliveries.
3. Wanindu Hasaranga, 2021
Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga bagged a hat-trick in the Super 12 match against South Africa. His victims were Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma and Dwaine Pretorius.
4. Kagiso Rabada, 2021
South African speedster Kagiso Rabada also took a hat-trick in the T20 WC last year. Rabada dismissed England’s Chris Woakes, Eoin Morgan and Chris Jordan for a hat-trick.
5. Karthik Meiyappan, T20 World Cup 2022
The latest name on this list is UAE’s spin bowler Karthik Meiyappan. Playing against Sri Lanka in Round 1, he dismissed Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka. It will be interesting to see if there are any additions to this list in the remaining matches of this year’s mega event.
