Test cricket is the ultimate format of the game. Many players dream of playing Tests for their nation, but it is difficult to break into the red-ball team because one needs to have proper skills to earn a place in the Test playing XI.
While a player can break into the Test team after a splendid first-class season, holding the place in the Test team is even more difficult. The fact that only five players who made their Test debut before 2010 are still playing Tests in 2024 shows how difficult it is to have a long Test career, especially in the T20 era. Here’s a list of the five names.
1. Mushfiqur Rahim made his Test cricket debut in 2005
Veteran Bangladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim will soon complete two decades in Tests. The right-handed batter made his debut in 2005 and may feature in upcoming Tests against Pakistan.
2. Shakib Al Hasan made his Test cricket debut in 2007
Another seasoned pro from Bangladesh to feature on the list is Shakib Al Hasan. The veteran all-rounder made his Test debut in 2007 and is still active in the longest format of the game.
3. Kemar Roach
West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach started his Test career in 2009. Despite being a fast bowler, Roach has taken care of his body and is playing Tests even in 2024.
4. Angelo Mathews
Experienced Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews has played 109 Test matches in his career. He made his debut against Pakistan in 2009, while his last Test appearance was against Bangladesh in April this year.
5. Tim Southee
The only player from SENA countries to feature on the list is Tim Southee. He is the current New Zealand captain at the age of 35. The fast bowler made his Test debut against England in March 2008.
