T20 World Cup 2022 has been one of the most entertaining cricket tournaments of all time. Everyday there has been a new surprise in store for the fans in this mega event. Defending champions Australia have been knocked out of the competition already.
Fans have been comparing the 2022 edition of T20 World Cup with the 2011 World Cup. However, not all members of the cricket universe would have noticed that the tournament also has some similarities with the 2017 Champions Trophy. Here’s a list of five such similarities.
1. Group A is quite similar to Group 1 in T20 World Cup 2022
Champions Trophy tournament only has 8 teams. In Group A of ICC Champions Trophy 2017, Australia, England and New Zealand were together. Even in Group 1 of T20 World Cup 2022, England, Australia and New Zealand were together.
2. Group B is quite similar to Group 2 in T20 World Cup 2022
Even the second ground has a lot of same teams. India, Pakistan and South Africa were together in that tournament, and in this tournament, India, Pakistan and South Africa were in the same group.
3. Australia were knocked out due to rain
Australia have been one of the top-performing teams in ICC events. However, they did not win a single match in the 2017 Champions Trophy. Two of their three matches were washed away due to rain, while they lost one against England. In 2022 T20 WC, their game against England did not happen due to rain, and that played a major role in their exit.
4. Team that India exited in group stage
In 2017 Champions Trophy, Sri Lanka registered a seven-wicket win against India. However, they did not qualify for semifinals. The same happened with South Africa in 2022.
5. No West Indies
West Indies did not finish in the Top 8 of the rankings, so they did not qualify for the Champions Trophy. Even in 2022 T20 WC, they did not make it to the Super 12.
