Temba Bavuma has stepped down as the captain of South Africa’s T20I captain today. Cricket South Africa appointed him as their new Test captain, while the right-handed batter relinquished the captain’s position in the shortest format of the game, following a disappointing show in recent matches.
The position is vacant to become the new T20I captain of the South African cricket team. Multiple candidates are ready to take over the role. Here’s a list of the six men who could replace Temba Bavuma as the new captain of South Africa’s T20I side.
1. Keshav Maharaj may replace Temba Bavuma
The most likely new captain of South Africa will be spin bowler Keshav Maharaj. The Indian origin bowler has got a decent experience of leading the team in recent years. He seems like a calm leader as well.
2. Aiden Markram may replace Temba Bavuma
Recently, Aiden Markram captained SunRisers Eastern Cape to the inaugural SA20 Championship. Interestingly, Bavuma played Markram’s captaincy in that tournament.
3. David Miller may replace Temba Bavuma
David Miller was the skipper of the South African cricket team in their away series against England last year. He is a calm leader, who can take the Proteas T20I team to the next level.
4. Quinton de Kock
Wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock only plays red-ball cricket for South Africa. Since he will likely be available for the team’s all T20I fixtures, he will be among the candidates to become the captain.
5. Faf du Plessis
If the new coaching staff of South Africa allows Faf du Plessis to play T20Is again, he can return as the skipper. He has enormous leadership experience under his belt.
6. Wayne Parnell
All-rounder Wayne Parnell impressed the fans with his leadership skills at Pretoria Capitals in the recently-concluded SA20 tournament. He should be among the candidates to replace Bavuma as well.
