7 Cities That Deserve An IPL Franchise If The Next Season Will Feature 9 Teams

After the conclusion of IPL 2020, there are several reports emerging that we could see an additional team next season. Along with these rumors, a few sources have also revealed that a full-auction is also in the pipeline. Earlier too, IPL had experimented with this strategy. The likes of Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India were part of few seasons before the tournament was made back into an eight-team affair.

Well, an additional franchise would change the dynamics of the competition. The fixtures would change, and a massive reshuffle of teams could also take place. However, the most important part would be as to which city the team will be based out of. The top-cities already have their own franchises, and if there would be a ninth team, here are seven cities that would deserve it.

1.Ahmedabad

The recent talks also hint that the 9th team would be based out of Ahmedabad. Jay Shah is already in talks for the same, and it said that the newly-constructed Motera Stadium would be the home-ground. Gujarat has already had a franchise previously in the form of Gujarat Lions. For a state that has a rich cricketing heritage, an IPL franchise would be well-deserving. It may not be a surprise if they even pull off a home-grown marquee signing like Hardik Pandya or Krunal Pandya.

2.Pune

Pune has had two different IPL franchises in the past. In terms of feasibility, Pune ranks better. There is already the infrastructure in place, and it would not be a problem to tap into the non-Mumbai Maharashtrian fanbase. The broadcasters would also be in approval as a Maharashtrian Derby could ring in viewership. That said, for a new franchise to go against the Mumbai Indians, some serious talent has to be hired.

3.Trivandrum

Kochi has had a franchise but Kerala capital Trivandrum is yet to have one. In recent times, Trivandrum has turned into the cricketing hub of the state. There is an international stadium too, which supports the argument. The talent is also in good shape in the state. Led by Sanju Samson, Kerala has some exceptional cricketers in the form of Basil Thampi and Sandeep Warrier. A few good signings and this franchise could be ready to launch.

4.Lucknow

The capital of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow too deserves an IPL franchise. The state has given multiple cricketers to the country, and just like the other states, the number of fans is high here. There is a decent stadium also, and all these factors could come into the picture. Having Suresh Raina as the captain would be a bonus if a Lucknow-based IPL franchise does happen.

5.Ranchi

Although Jharkhand was not known for its cricket, after the rise of MS Dhoni, people started following the cricketing activities there too. To be honest, we are impressed with the talent out there. Apart from MSD, Jharkhand is home to the likes of Ishan Kishan, Virat Singh, and Saurabh Tiwary as well. From BCCI’s perspective, tapping into this city could sound like a good move. However, if Ranchi does get a franchise, it is impossible to imagine it without MS Dhoni as the captain.

6.Guwahati

It is clear from BCCI’s move of handing Ranji status to the north-east states that the board is serious about improving the sport there. Getting an IPL franchise at Assam could add energy to BCCI’s vision. In terms of talent, Assam and the other NE states are gradually improving. If IPL teams start scouting here, more talents like Riyan Parag could be unearthed.

7.Indore

The Holkar Stadium in Indore is one of the best stadiums in the country. The city is also a hub of cricket fanatics. The sport is keenly followed there, and the fans there would be pleased if an IPL franchise comes their way. That said, this proposition is highly unlikely because BCCI would be wary of the underperforming Ranji side in the state. Apart from Avesh Khan, no MP player is making a statement these days. The local board would want to work on this before anything.
