Indian Test cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has revealed that he does not have any idea as to why the squad’s veteran off-spin bowler Ravichandran Ashwin does not get a chance to play in Test matches outside India. During the previous tour of England, fans and critics wanted Ashwin to play in the red-ball games, but the team management benched him for all matches.
Yesterday, the first match of the ICC World Test Championship series between the Indian cricket team and the Sri Lankan cricket team ended at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. The Indian team bulldozed the Sri Lankan team by an innings and 222 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the 2-match series.
All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was the hero of the match for the home side. The Saurashtra player scored 175 runs in the first innings and then took nine wickets with the ball across the two innings to help the Indian team win by an innings and 222 runs.
Ravichandran Ashwin supported him to perfection by scalping six wickets across the two innings. Commenting on why Ashwin does not get game time in overseas matches, Rohit Sharma said at the post-match presentation:
“Really, can’t tell you anything about his overseas place and why doesn’t he find it and why is he in not in the eleven. Obviously, I have no idea as I wasn’t part of the selection at that point and I can’t tell you what happened and why was he left out and why didn’t he play and that kind of stuff.”

Rohit Sharma made his Test captaincy debut for the Indian cricket team during the first game of the World Test Championship series against the Sri Lankan side.
The duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin performed exceptionally well, and it will be interesting to see if Rohit uses the duo together when the Indian team travels overseas for the future World Test Championship matches.
