The reverse countdown to the T20 World Cup 2024 has started. The mega event is just a few days away, and almost all teams have started playing the warm-up matches as well. Former champions Australia crushed Namibia in their first warm-up game of the tournament.
Australia have been quite dominant in world cricket over the last few decades. In fact, in 2023 alone, they won the World Test Championship Final and ODI World Cup. While most of the players from the ODI WC team will play in T20 WC, here’s a list of four names from that squad who will miss out.
1. Steve Smith will miss T20 World Cup 2024
One of the biggest names missing from Australia’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad is Steve Smith. The veteran Aussie batter was once the captain of Australia. While he continues to be a first-choice player in the longer formats, the selectors have ignored him for T20Is.
2. Marnus Labuschagne will miss T20 World Cup 2024
Marnus Labuschagne is another cricketer who has been a regular in the longer formats, but the Australian selectors do not consider him for T20Is. After winning two ICC trophies last year, Labuschagne will watch this T20 WC from the sidelines.
3. Alex Carey
Wicketkeeper batter Alex Carey has a decent record in T20Is. However, the Aussie selectors have preferred veteran batter Matthew Wade for the T20 WC 2024. Carey hasn’t played a T20I since 2021.
4. Sean Abbott
Not many fans would remember that pace-bowling all-rounder Sean Abbott was a part of the Aussie squad that won the ODI WC. Instead of Abbott, Nathan Ellis is present as the backup pacer for Australia in the T20 WC.
