Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are one of the most decorated franchises in the Indian Premier League, with five championships to their name. The Chennai-based franchise have won the trophy in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023, and they narrowly missed out on the playoffs in 2024.
One of the main reasons behind CSK’s success is the fact that they groom their players so well and get the best out of them. The players’ careers change once they have a stint with Chennai in IPL. In fact, the following five names went on to become coaches of other teams after playing for CSK.
1. Former CSK player Dwayne Bravo joined KKR as mentor
Dwayne Bravo was an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings team in the early 2010s. He won the Purple Cap award as well, but now, Bravo has switched to the Kolkata Knight Riders team as a mentor for 2025 season.
2. Former CSK player Muttiah Muralitharan joined SRH as bowling coach
Legendary off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan turned up for Chennai Super Kings in the first three IPL seasons. He retired shortly after that, and in 2022, he joined the Sunrisers Hyderabad as their spin-bowling coach.
3. Parthiv Patel
Parthiv Patel was also a part of the Chennai Super Kings squad from 2008 to 2010. The former Indian wicketkeeper later joined Mumbai Indians’ sister franchise MI Emirates as a batting coach in ILT20.
4. Albie Morkel
Albie Morkel was the most underrated match-winner for Chennai Super Kings during the initial IPL seasons. His pace bowling and big-hitting skills helped Chennai win many matches. After retirement, Morkel joined Namibia as their head coach.
5. Lakshmipathy Balaji
Lakshmipathy Balaji also turned up for Chennai in the initial few seasons. The former Indian fast bowler retired from all forms of cricket in 2016. A year after that, Kolkata Knight Riders signed him as the bowling coach and mentor.
