Not long ago, Ajinkya Rahane captained the Indian Test cricket team in the home series against the New Zealand cricket team. However, a dip in his batting form led to his exit from the leadership group of the Indian Test cricket team. Now, according to reports, Rahane will play under 2018 ICC U-19 World Cup-winning captain Prithvi Shaw’s leadership for Mumbai in the upcoming Ranji Trophy.

Rahane has an envious record as the Test cricket team captain of India. He has played in six matches as captain, and the team has not lost a single game at home and even overseas. In January 2021, Ajinkya led the Indian cricket team to a historic 2-1 win over the Australian cricket team in an ICC World Test Championship series.

In that series, Shaw was in the Indian squad and was benched for most matches. Speaking to Cricbuzz, a Mumbai Cricket Association official clarified that captaincy did not matter much to Rahane, and he was ready to mentor the team’s youngsters.

“Captaincy is not important for someone like Ajinkya, who has achieved what was considered to be impossible for a cricket captain. He has agreed to play as well as mentor the side and help restore the Mumbai glory in domestic cricket,” said the MCA official.

Ajinkya Rahane has no ego issues and has no problem with Prithvi Shaw

The official further said that even though Rahane is a senior player, he has no issue in playing under Shaw. Rahane and Shaw are top of the two batters in Indian cricket right now. The two batters will be keen to help Mumbai become the 42-time champions of Ranji Trophy.

Mumbai is a part of Group D this year along with Saurashtra, Odisha and Goa. All the Group D matches will happen in Ahmedabad.
