“Could Tilak Varma play in 2023 ODI WC in India’s middle order?”- Rohit Sharma answers a million-dollar question

The arrival of Tilak Varma on the international stage has given some kind of hope to the Indian fans for a player of big caliber who can control the innings in the middle order. The 20-year-old made his international debut in the first match of the ongoing T20I series against West Indies.

And he announced himself in remarkable fashion. Tilak is the leading run-scorer in the ongoing series and has shown great maturity at a young age. Some former cricketers and fans have already said that he can be India’s middle-order batter in the coming World Cup.

But it doesn’t look practical because the coming World Cup is just a couple of months away. Though India has struggled to find a consistent batter in the middle order, as skipper Rohit Sharma also admitted. He recently said that India hasn’t found a replacement for Yuvraj Singh.

However, in an interaction, Rohit was asked about Tilak’s chances to play in the coming World Cup. To which, The Indian captain, along with other seniors, are not part of the ongoing T20I series, which is when Tilak showed great form. He has scored 139 runs at 69.50 and 139.50, respectively. His performance has sparked a debate over his place in the ODI team.

Meanwhile, Rohit hasn’t commented on this but has praised the 20-year-old for his performance. Rohit said, “He is very promising. In him, I can see that, for the age that he is, he is quite mature. That is all that I will say about him. I do not know about the World Cup and all, but definitely the guy is talented, and he showed it in these few games that he has played for India.”

Notably, India has been struggling to find the right combination at no. 4 and 5. The injuries to KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant have made this case more problematic. During this period, India has given chances to Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson, but both have not found their feet in the 50-over format so far.
