"Don't know if MS Dhoni was going to win you the game from dressing room"- Ex-Indian wicket-keeper on India's tactical blunder in 2019 WC

Former Indian wicket-keeper batsman, Parthiv Patel, has pointed out that India struggles to take the right decision at the right time in the ICC tournaments. That is the reason India hasn’t won an ICC title in almost a decade. India won the last ICC tournament in 2013, which was the Champions Trophy in England under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

But since the trophy drought is getting wider with every tournament. India came close to winning the 2017 Champions Trophy, when they reached the finals. But in the end, they lost the match at the hands of arch rivals Pakistan. Then, in the 2021 T20 World Cup, India made an early exit from the group stage after losing its first two matches.

According to Parthiv, the main reason for India’s bad performance in ICC tournaments is the tactical blunders. He referred to the 2019 World Cup, when India lost to New Zealand in the semi-finals. The former wicket-keeper said that it was a completely wrong decision to send MS Dhoni at No. 7.

In a discussion on Cricbuzz about the performance of India in ICC events, he said that India should have sent MSD at No. 4 instead of sending Dinesh Karthik. In a high-voltage semi-final match, New Zealand made 239/8 in their 50 overs. In response, India went through a horrible start with Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli getting out after scoring one run each.

Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant made 32 runs apiece. But DK, who came out to bat at No. 5, got out cheaply for just 5 runs, which put India under more pressure. However, Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni tried hard.

Jadeja made a quick 77 runs, while MSD scored 50 runs. But in the penultimate over of the chase, MSD got run out at the wrong time and all the hopes of India were shattered with that wicket. Highlighting that moment, Parthiv said,”In the 2019 World Cup semi-final, we sent Dinesh Karthik to bat at five and MS Dhoni at seven. I don’t know if MS Dhoni was going to win you the game from the dressing room.”

Furthermore, the former wicket-taker spoke about other performances. He pointed out that the biggest error in the 2021 World Cup was to leave India’s No. 1 spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal, out. Parthiv also highlighted the loss in the finals of the 2017 Champions Trophy. He said that the error was to bowl first after winning the toss. He concluded, “We didn’t win those ICC trophies because we were tactically not right.”
