Explained: How IPL 2022 Groups have been formed

The IPL 2022 Groups have been announced. Like the 2011 edition of the Indian Premier League, there are 10 teams this year as well who have been divided into two groups of five teams each. There are two Groups A and B. The first group comprises the Mumbai Indians, the Kolkata Knight Riders, the Rajasthan Royals, the Lucknow Super Giants and the Delhi Capitals.

The Group B consists of the Gujarat Titans, the Chennai Super Kings, the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the Punjab Kings and the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The rules of the group stage are such that the teams will play two matches each against the teams of their group and one match each against the team of other group.

Also, the mirror opponents will play from both groups will play two matches each. The two groups were formed by the ranking system. All teams were placed according to the number of titles won by them and the number of final appearances used as tiebreaker.

So, Mumbai Indians, with five titles, went to Group A. Chennai Super Kings, with four titles, were placed in Group B. Kolkata Knight Riders found place in Group A with two championships, while Sunrisers Hyderabad received a place in the B Group. Here is the complete table.

Why are Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings playing 2 matches against each other despite being in different IPL 2022 Groups?

As mentioned ahead, there are mirror opponents who will two matches against each other, meaning team number 1 vs. team number 2, team number 3 vs. team number 4 and so on from the rankings.

The Gujarat Titans will play two matches against the Lucknow Super Giants, MI will battle CSK, RCB will take on RR, KKR will lock horns with SRH, whereas DC and PBKS will cross swords twice because of this rule.
