The group stage of T20 World Cup 2024 is done and dusted. 12 teams have been eliminated. India, Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, South Africa, USA, England and West Indies have emerged as the eight teams which will play in the Super 8s.
Unlike IPL, T20 World Cup did not see too many high-scoring games in the first round. Bowlers ruled the roost here, especially in New York. Speaking of T20 World Cup 2024 group stage, here’s a playing XI of such players who flopped.
Openers – Finn Allen (wk) and Virat Kohli
Finn Allen will open the batting for this team along with Indian star Virat Kohli. Allen managed only 35 runs in four innings for the Kiwis, while Kohli could not touch double digits in the three innings he played. Kohli will likely bounce back in the Super 8s stage of the tournament.
Middle Order – Kane Williamson (c), Will Jacks, Glenn Maxwell, Ravindra Jadeja and Daryl Mitchell
Kane Williamson will bat at number three and also lead the team. The ‘Fab 4’ member managed only 28 runs in four matches for his country, while England had to drop Will Jacks from their playing XI after he scored only 15 runs off 17 balls in three matches.
Glenn Maxwell’s horrendous run in T20s continued as he returned with 39 runs in four matches for Australia. Ravindra Jadeja surprisingly could not score any runs, take any wickets or take any catches for India in the group stage.
Daryl Mitchell was a game-changer for New Zealand in the ODI World Cup. However, he flopped in the T20 World Cup group stage, leaking 35 runs in two overs and scoring 36 runs in four matches.
Bowlers – Maheesh Theekshana, Tangeni Lungameni, Kaleem Sana and Chris Sole
Sri Lanka’s Maheesh Theekshana will lead the spin attack of this team. Theekshana scalped only one wicket in three matches, with his average being 53. Namibia’s left-arm medium pacer Tangeni Lungameni and Canada’s left-arm fast bowler Kaleem Sana also managed just a solitary wicket each, with their averages being more than 50.
Scotland’s Chris Sole could not match the expectations. The express pacer took two wickets in four matches at an expensive economy rate of 9.70.
